Achievements
HIV+ children are still discriminated against in many parts of the world. HIV is not a death sentence anymore, but HIV positive people experience higher rates of poverty and HIV related stigma. HIV positives have less access to educational opportunities which often lead to their inability to progress past primary school level or find jobs that provide enough income for themselves and their family. But this was not always so! There are many success stories about HIV + kids who not only succeeded academically but also found ways to help other HIV + children get an education too!
– As an HIV positive student in the United States, young Thomas was so scared to tell his friends that he had HIV. But one day, when they were talking about HIV and AIDS in science class at school, he plucked up courage and told them all. And do you know what? His classmates supported him 100%! They didn’t treat him any differently and even invited Thomas to play with them during recess.
HIV+ children in Africa also experience a lot of stigma and discrimination from their teachers, classmates and other people around them. But not every HIV child is ignorant or stuck up! Some HIV + boys like David Omondi are working hard towards the fight against AIDS stigma in Africa. David Omondi is HIV positive himself and has been living with the virus for 15 years. But this hasn’t stopped him from continuing education, becoming a role model to other HIV + kids and helping them stay in school!
HIV+ Children & Discrimination
– HIV+ children are not always discriminated against by their classmates or teachers. Some HIV positives like Nadia Eke are even more popular than HIV negatives! HIV positive Nadia is a student in Uganda and she has never missed school. She’s very active, gets good grades and wants to study medicine when she finishes her education so that HIV + children can get proper medical care too
Adekunle Wuraola
– Adekunle Wuraola was only 12 years old when doctors diagnosed him HIV positive. But this hasn’t stopped Wuraola from dreaming big and working hard to achieve those dreams! He’s HIV +, but he doesn’t let it hold him back because HIV can be managed with proper treatment nowadays. Adekunle is a student at Covenant University where he studies computer science engineering and plans on becoming a computer programmer when he graduates.

These stories have inspired us at NGO RAYS- Aasha ki Ek Kiran, to help craft better lives for our children, to destigmatize the malady, and to help them achieve a better and improved outlook. The proof is in the pudding and we are proud to share the academic achievements of our children.
